German Special Envoy to Syria: Lifting sanctions on Syria a positive step towards regional stability

Berlin, SANA- The German special envoy to Syria, Stefan Schneck, has affirmed that the European Union’s decision to lift sanctions on Syria represents a positive step towards achieving stability in the country, which in turn reflects on the stability of the region.

In a statement to Al Jazeera Mubasher on Tuesday, Schneck explained that Germany has contributed to lifting European sanctions over the past months in key sectors such as transportation, finance, and energy, as well as other essential areas for the Syrian people.

The goal, he said, is to eventually lift all economic sanctions in order to support Syria’s economic and political reconstruction and foster its development in line with the aspirations of its people. He also highlighted Germany’s interest in building partnerships with Syria to tackle shared challenges, such as combating drug trafficking and illicit trade.

Schneck further emphasized Germany’s strong commitment to realizing the ambitions of the Syrian people and fostering stability in Syria, which in turn enhances regional stability.

He pointed out that Germany has played a pivotal role within the European Union in lifting sanctions and shaping a new European policy toward Syria. Expressing his confidence, he stated that he believes the Syrian government will continue its course of national dialogue, ultimately leading to a just and stable state.
