Saudi Arabia and Qatar Pay Syria's Financial Arrears to the World Bank

Riyadh, SANA- The Finance Ministries of Saudi Arabia and Qatar announced today the payment of Syria’s financial arrears to the World Bank (WB), amounting to approximately $15 million.

As reported by the Saudi Arabian News Agency (SPA), a joint Saudi-Qatari statement clarified that this measure aims to continue supporting and accelerating Syria’s economic recovery.

It explained that this payment will allow the World Bank to resume its support and activities in Syria after a hiatus of more than fourteen years.

It will also allow Syria to receive funds from the World Bank in the near future to support certain sectors, in addition to providing technical assistance, which will contribute to rebuilding institutions and building capacities to accelerate the pace of development.

“Saudi Arabia and Qatar urge international and regional financial institutions to rapidly resume and expand their development work in Syria, and to support all efforts that would contribute to realizing the aspirations of the Syrian people and the stability and well-being of the region,” he said.
