UNHCR: More than 1.4 million Syrians returned to their homes since the fall of the former regime

Geneva, SANA-The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced Friday that more than 1.4 million Syrians have returned to their homes since the fall of the former regime.

“400,000 Syrians have returned from neighboring countries since the fall of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024. During the same period, more than one million internally displaced persons (IDPs) have returned inside Syria, bringing the total number of Syrians who have returned to their homes to more than 1.4 million.” In a statement published Friday on its website, the UNHCR said.

The UNHCR affirmed the need for Syrians to receive support in the areas of shelter, livelihoods, protection, and legal assistance to make their return successful and sustainable.

It highlighted the importance of adequate funding to enable the expected return of approximately 1.5 million Syrians to their homeland this year, stating that “support for UNHCR and humanitarian actors is critical to achieving stability.”.

“The severe funding shortfall we face is putting the lives of millions at risk. Nearly 16.7 million people inside Syria—about 90% of the population—need some form of humanitarian assistance, while more than 7.4 million Syrians remain internally displaced.” The UNHCR added.

It called on traditional donors to “make an additional effort,” also calling on “wealthy countries that have not yet contributed to support it in ensuring the safe and dignified return of Syrian refugees wishing to return home.”.
