UNHCR: 52,000 Syrian refugees return from Jordan since the fall of defunct regime

Amman, SANA-The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced Monday that around 52,000 Syrian refugees registered with UNHCR in Jordan have returned to Syria since the fall of the defunct regime on 8 December 2024.

The UNHCR report, reviewed by Jordan’s al Mamlaka TV, indicated that the average number of refugees returning to Syria daily reached 372, compared to an average of 180 refugees the previous week.

It affirmed the return of approximately 107,000 Syrian refugees from Jordan since the opening of  Jaber (Nassib) border crossing in 2018.

The UNHCR report added: “The demographic composition of the returnees remained largely unchanged compared to previous weeks, with women and girls representing approximately 45 percent of the total number of returning refugees, while children accounted for around 42 percent, and men of age (18-40 years old) made up around 23 percent of overall the retunes”.

UNHCR estimates that 372,550 Syrian refugees have returned to their country via neighboring countries since the fall of the former regime until the beginning of this April. They crossed the borders from Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt, and other countries.

The report also indicated that, as of March 27, approximately 1.05 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) have returned to their homes in Syria, while there are some 674,000 IDPs in Syria.

It is noteworthy that Jordan has hosted approximately 1.3 million Syrians since the beginning of 2011, including approximately 600,000 refugees registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
