UN Human Rights Council stresses respecting Syria‘s sovereignty

Geneva  – SANA

UN Human Rights Council reaffirmed Wednesday commitment to the “full respect” of the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Syria.

United Kingdom’s Human Rights Ambassador, Eleanor Sanders said in a statement delivered on behalf of Syria Core Group that the Human Rights Council renewed in April, the mandate of the Commission of Inquiry on Syria by a landmark consensus.

The Commission continues to “fulfil an important role to document human rights violations and abuses across the country”, she added

“We appreciate the Syrian government’s facilitation and welcome the Commission’s report on the violence in the coastal region” Sanders said and welcomed “positive steps” made by the Syrian government.

She clarified that the investigations into the coastal violence, and the establishment of the Commissions on Transitional Justice and Missing Persons, are “important steps towards justice and reconciliation”.

UK representative also welcomed the establishment of an investigatory committee and the efforts to develop a roadmap to address the crisis in Sweida as agreed by Syria, Jordan and the United States.

The statement called for “transparent and tangible action” against all perpetrators and that the justice system must serve all Syrians.
