New York, Feb. 13 (SANA) The UN Security Council welcomed a comprehensive agreement between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), including a permanent ceasefire and plans for civilian, economic, administrative and military integration in northeast Syria.
The council also praised the start of implementation and reaffirmed its commitment to Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a press statement issued Thursday night, council members said the agreement must be upheld to ensure civilian protection, unhindered humanitarian access and Syria’s continued recovery, according to the UN News Centre.
The council welcomed the issuance of Decree No. 13 by President Ahmad al-Sharaa, which guarantees the rights of Syrian Kurds, and stressed the need for further progress in integrating Kurdish representatives into state institutions and facilitating the return of displaced Kurds to their areas of origin.
Council members commended recent Syrian government measures to combat the (ISIS) terrorist organization and called for preventing any security vacuum in and around detention facilities in northeast Syria holding ISIS fighters.
Members also expressed concern over reports of detainee escapes, while welcoming swift government action to restore order, recapture escapees and assume responsibility for the facilities.
The council praised UN efforts to reach displacement camps in the region and resume humanitarian assistance, as well as the Syrian government’s facilitation of aid deliveries. It urged the development of safe transition plans for managing detention centers and camps housing individuals linked to ISIS and called for close international coordination to mitigate security risks.
Reaffirming its commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity, the Security Council called on all states to respect these principles and refrain from actions that could destabilize the country.
Syria recently participated for the first time in a meeting of political directors of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS in Riyadh, marking a new phase in its counterterrorism efforts.
