Rome, Oct. 8 (SANA) Italian researchers have developed an advanced artificial intelligence-powered system capable of recreating performances by renowned musicians recorded more than a century ago by reading historical piano rolls and converting them into precise digital data.
The Italian website Sul Panaro reported Tuesday that a team from the Luciano Pavarotti Conservatory had developed a device capable of analyzing the perforations in historical piano rolls and recovering characteristics of the original instruments, allowing performances to be reproduced in the style in which they were originally recorded.
The researchers said the system can be connected to a modern piano whose keys and hammers are mechanically operated to play musical pieces as if the original performer were sitting at the instrument.
The digital data can also be transmitted online, allowing the same performance to be played simultaneously on any connected piano around the world.
The innovation addresses a long-standing problem that has prevented such piano rolls from being played back. The rolls relied on mechanical player pianos that have disappeared over time, while their specifications have been lost or damaged.
The technology could therefore offer a new way to preserve musical heritage for future generations.
