Jakarta, Aug. 9 (SANA) Indonesia has closed Mount Bromo National Park in East Java to tourists as a wildfire near the active volcano spread to about 176 hectares, authorities said.
The fire, which broke out on Monday near the volcano’s crater, had covered about 60 hectares by Thursday before spreading further, Indonesia’s state news agency reported on Sunday.
Park authorities said all tourism activities had been suspended to protect visitors, staff and residents of nearby communities, adding that the closure would remain in effect until further notice.
Visitors with existing bookings can reschedule their trips or request ticket refunds, authorities said.
Firefighting operations were continuing, with helicopters conducting water drops and drones being used to spray water over affected areas. Authorities have not determined the cause of the fire, and no injuries have been reported.
Mount Bromo, one of Indonesia’s best-known active volcanoes, is a major tourist attraction in East Java.
