“As a result of the painful events that took place on the Syrian coast on March 6, and the subsequent attacks on members of the Public Security, which claimed the lives of a number of them, followed by violations that targeted civilians and claimed lives of many others, the Syrians, both men and women, were shocked, and the depth the Syrian tragedy  over 14 years was seen in their conscience, so it was very necessary to have a comprehensive transitional justice program that would enable them to address the effects of the past, including gross human rights violations and abuses,” Spokesperson for the Committee, Mr. Yasser Al-Farhan, said during a press conference held at the Ministry of Media today.

Al-Farhan added that President of the Syrian Republic issued a decision to form an independent national committee to investigate the committed incidents, comprising five judges, a criminal security brigadier, and a human rights lawyer, all of whom are experts specializing in documentation and justice issues.

He affirmed that the committee began its work with a meeting by President of the Republic, during which he stressed the importance of its role in revealing the truth, and the state’s commitment to hold those involved accountable and provide justice to the victims.
