Damascus Countryside, SANA-The National Commission for the Missing, in cooperation with the Civil Administration in Darayya, Damascus Countryside, organized an event on Saturday to commemorate the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances.

The event aimed to honor the memory of the victims and the missing, and to affirm the right of their families to truth and justice.

The Participants affirmed that the issue of the missing is a humanitarian one, and that perpetrators of war crimes and serious human rights violations will not escape accountability.

Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, Raed al-Saleh, stated to SANA that the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances comes amid the presence of thousands of missing persons whose fate remains unknown in Syria.

He pointed out that Darayya is one of the areas that suffered the most, having endured a siege and a major military campaign by the former regime, making it a symbol of the humanitarian suffering related to enforced disappearance in the country.

For his part, Head of the National Commission for Transitional Justice, Abdul Baset Abdul Latif, explained that the Commission’s tasks include uncovering the truth about the fate of the forcibly disappeared, holding perpetrators accountable, ensuring reparations and compensation for victims, and working to prevent the recurrence of violations.

Head of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, Mohammad Hazem Baqleh, noted that the file of martyrs and forcibly disappeared is painful and vast. He stated that the Red Crescent is working with the National Commission for the Missing to uncover the truth and has specialized teams dedicated to searching for the missing and handling remains.

It is worth noting that one of the main goals of commemorating the International Day of the Missing and Forcibly Disappeared, observed annually on August 30, is to shed light on cases of enforced disappearance and to provide support to the families of victims who suffer from the loss of their loved ones.
