Patriarch Absi Meets Delegation from the People's Assembly Election Committee

Damascus, SANA-Patriarch of Antioch and All the East for the Melkite Greek Catholics, Youssef Absi, met on Wednesday with a delegation from the Higher Committee for the People’s Assembly Elections at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Dormition in Harat Al-Zaytoun, Damascus.

The meeting was held as part of consultations on the mechanisms of the upcoming electoral process and to boost national unity among the various components of Syrian society.

It also addressed key points related to the new electoral mechanisms and affirmed the role of transitional justice in building a modern Syria, thereby strengthening the path of national cohesion among the Syrian people.

In a statement to SANA, Dr. Mohammad Taha al-Ahmad, head of the Higher Election Committee, stressed that the meeting falls within efforts to strengthen cooperation among the various religious and national components to ensure the success of the upcoming electoral milestone.

He underlined that Christians are an integral part of Syrian society and play a prominent role in reinforcing national values. He added that the People’s Assembly should serve as a starting point for transitional and electoral justice.

For his part, Archimandrite Antoine Masleh stated that the meeting focused on the electoral process and the procedures necessary to ensure its transparency, in addition to discussing national issues that contribute to building a new Syria.

“Our message to the election committee is that the homeland should be a unifying umbrella for all Syrians, and that the upcoming legislation in the People’s Assembly should form a strong foundation for building a cohesive nation across economic, developmental, and legal domains.” He said.
