Two human rights activists: former regime's chemical attacks are crime of genocide

Damascus, SANA – Two human rights activists emphasized that the chemical attacks committed by the former regime against civilians constitute a “double crime” under international law and are not subject to the statute of limitations.
They emphasized the need to transform the available evidence into comprehensive legal files to ensure the prosecution of the perpetrators and justice for the victims.

In exclusive statements to SANA, Abdullah Al-Hawash, a member of the establishment of the Association of Victims of Chemical Weapons (AVCW), explained that the photos, videos, medical reports, and testimonies of survivors constitute a compelling legal basis for convicting the perpetrators of these crimes, which constitute war crimes against humanity according to Articles 7 and 8 of the Rome Statute.

For his part, Muhannad al-Hasani, chairman of the Syrian Organization for Human Rights (Sawasiya), underlined that the chemical attacks carried out by the former regime represent a flagrant violation of the norms of armed conflict, as prohibited weapons were used against civilians in a systematic and widespread manner, making them a crime against humanity of a genocidal nature.

The two activists agreed that justice is a basic condition for achieving sustainable peace in Syria, stressing the need to provide legal and psychological support to the victims, and to keep the memory of the massacres alive in the conscience of Syrians, to ensure that they are not repeated in the future.
