New York, SANA-UN Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza that would pave the way for a political solution based on the UN resolutions.

The UN News website quoted Guterres as saying in a press conference at the organization’s headquarters in New York: “that the level of death and destruction witnessed in Gaza is unprecedented in recent times, undermining the most basic conditions of human dignity for the people of Gaza.

Guterres expressed his hope that the parties would be able to overcome the difficulties they face in order to achieve a ceasefire paves the way for a political solution in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions, adding, that this is why a conference on the two-state solution will be held in July.

He pointed out that the presence of 5 million people within a country and on their own land without any rights is completely contrary to humanity and international law.

For her part, UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell called on Israel to review its rules of engagement in Gaza following the killing of seven children last Sunday waiting in line for water at a distribution point.
