UNHCR calls for lifting sanctions on Syria

Geneva, SANA-UNHCR called for lifting the sanctions imposed on Syria to stimulate its economy and ensure the return of basic services, particularly, since the former regime, that was the main reason for imposing these sanctions, has been ousted .

“If we all want Syrians to be able to return to their country, we must make the economic conditions in Syria suitable and conducive to this return,” UNHCR spokesman William Spindler told Turkey’s Anadolu Agency.

Spindler called for lifting sanctions on Syria, indicating that “governments were imposing sanctions due to the former regime, but it has now ended, so there should be no reason for the sanctions to continue.”

He pointed out that UNHCR is working to ensure that the return of Syrians to their country is voluntary, stressing the importance of ensuring stability in Syria and rebuilding the infrastructure.
