New York, Aug. 27 (SANA) The United Nations warned that Gaza’s ceasefire remains fragile and conditions in the occupied West Bank are deteriorating, calling for the full implementation of a roadmap aimed at advancing transitional arrangements in the Gaza Strip.

Ramiz Alakbarov, Acting UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, told the Security Council that Palestinians in Gaza continued to endure severe humanitarian conditions, stressing the need to restore essential services, including sanitation, waste management, healthcare and livelihoods.

Gaza roadmap and humanitarian crisis

Alakbarov said full implementation of the roadmap would include the disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, deployment of an international stabilization force and transfer of transitional governance responsibilities to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza.

He said the measures should pave the way for a political process that ends the occupation, ensures the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and advances a two-state solution, calling for the immediate and full implementation of Security Council Resolution 2803.

Alakbarov also called for an end to attempts to seize, control or confiscate facilities belonging to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

Political transition

Nikolay Mladenov, High Representative of the Board of Peace for Gaza, said Hamas and other Palestinian factions in Gaza had agreed to hand over their weapons and transfer authority, describing the move as a “historic breakthrough.”

He said work was underway to establish the international stabilization force, develop monitoring and compliance mechanisms and create communication channels to prevent clashes and address emerging threats.

Mladenov urged Security Council members to support implementation of the plan and the political transition toward a demilitarized Gaza governed by Palestinians, rebuilt and reconnected with the world.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned Tuesday that civilians, including children, continued to be killed and injured by Israeli forces in Gaza and the West Bank, renewing its call for civilians to be protected.
