Washington, May 8 (SANA) U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that a three-day ceasefire agreement has been reached between Russia and Ukraine, scheduled to begin on May 9 and conclude on May 11.
In a statement via the “Truth Social” platform, Trump clarified that the ceasefire entails the suspension of all military operations. He further revealed that the deal includes a significant exchange of 1,000 prisoners from both sides, noting that he personally facilitated the request.
The U.S. President expressed his appreciation for the cooperation of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in agreeing to the temporary truce. Trump expressed hope that this move would signal the “beginning of the end” of a conflict he described as the largest since World War II.
Trump indicated that negotiations are ongoing to reach a final and comprehensive resolution to the conflict, asserting that diplomatic efforts are drawing closer “day by day” to a definitive solution.
The agreement follows individual de-escalation measures earlier this week, including a unilateral ceasefire announced by Russia on Monday to coincide with Victory Day celebrations and a localized truce observed by the Ukrainian side between May 5 and 6. These preliminary steps paved the way for the current broader mediation effort.
