Mexico City, April 20 (SANA) Two U.S. Embassy staff members were killed in a car crash on Sunday in Mexico’s northern state of Chihuahua, along with a Mexican official and a police officer, authorities said.
U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson said in a statement on X that he was “deeply saddened by the tragic loss” of two embassy personnel, as well as the director of Chihuahua’s State Investigation Agency (AEI) and an agency officer.
Reuters reported, citing local authorities, that the Mexican officials were involved in operations to dismantle drug laboratories as part of efforts to combat criminal gangs in the municipality of Morelos.
Violence linked to organized crime has escalated in Mexico in recent months, with a surge in clashes following the killing of a major drug trafficker in February 2026.
