Arab League condemns Israeli approval of death penalty law for Palestinian detainees
Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit

Cairo, March. 31 (SANA) Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit condemned Israel’s approval of a law allowing the execution of Palestinian detainees, describing it as a serious violation of international humanitarian law.

In a statement published Tuesday, Aboul Gheit said the measure contradicts fundamental principles of international humanitarian law and represents a form of discriminatory practice against Palestinians.

He added that the move reflects what he described as the growing influence of “extremist and racist” trends within Israeli political decision-making, and warned it forms part of a broader pattern of policies aimed at restricting Palestinian rights.

According to the statement, the legislation is linked to ongoing measures affecting the situation in the Palestinian territories, including actions that could pave the way for further changes on the ground.

Aboul Gheit also criticized what he described as the international community’s inability to take effective action, warning that continued policies of this nature risk escalating tensions and instability.

Israeli authorities approved the law on Monday.

Separately, the Palestinian side has requested an urgent meeting of the Arab League Council at the level of permanent representatives to discuss recent developments and potential responses to the legislation.
