Addis Ababa, March 14 (SANA) – At least 80 people have died in severe floods that swept through multiple regions of Ethiopia over the past week, authorities said Saturday, while dozens remain missing.
Heavy rainfall in the country’s southern areas caused widespread destruction, prompting the government to declare three days of national mourning, AFP reported.
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the floods and heavy rains have displaced thousands, and the agency has deployed rapid response teams to assist local health authorities.
The heavy rains are affecting much of East Africa this week, triggering deadly flooding across the region. In neighboring Kenya, at least 49 people have been reported killed in similar weather-related incidents.
