Khartoum, Jan. 26 (SANA) Sudanese army chief and head of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, said the military would not accept any political settlement that includes the reintegration of Rapid Support Forces (RSF), arguing that such proposals would only delay, rather than resolve, the country’s conflict.
Speaking on Sunday to a delegation of Turkish journalists, including reporters from Anadolu Agency, at his residence in Port Sudan, Burhan said the Sudanese Armed Forces were determined to defeat the RSF, which has been fighting the army since April 2023.
He said the war had caused extensive damage to Sudan’s infrastructure, with many vital facilities either severely damaged or destroyed. Burhan described the destruction as systematic and aimed at weakening the state.
“The Sudanese people have not surrendered and will not surrender, regardless of the challenges,” he said.
Burhan described the cost of the conflict as extremely high, saying Sudan had lost billions of dollars, with hundreds of thousands killed and millions displaced. He said public opinion in Sudan overwhelmingly supports the defeat of the RSF, which he described as a rebel force.
The army chief said the Sudanese Armed Forces derive their authority from legal and constitutional legitimacy, and warned against portraying the conflict as a struggle between two equal sides.
Burhan also criticized international narratives that frame the war as a conflict between “two parties,” saying such descriptions misrepresent the situation. He said the military had been able to withstand pressure with support from several regional allies, including Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Eritrea.
He added that he had proposed Turkey’s involvement in mediation efforts, expressing confidence in Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and saying Ankara has the capacity to contribute to a political process.
