Two U.S. National Guard members killed in Washington

Two U.S. National Guard members were killed Wednesday near the White House in Washington after coming under gunfire. The suspect, who was wounded during the incident, was taken into custody.

According to the Associated Press, Washington police said in a statement that the two soldiers were fatally shot near the White House and that the suspect was apprehended immediately.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey confirmed the incident in a social media post, noting that he remains in close contact with federal officials as the investigation continues.

President Donald Trump said in a statement on Truth Social: “The shooter will pay a very heavy price.”

The Associated Press reported a large security presence in the area, with emergency vehicles rushing to the scene and at least one helicopter landing near the National Mall.

Gun violence continues to plague the United States. Earlier this month, nine people were injured in a shooting in Bath Township, Ohio.
