Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit reiterated the League’s support for Lebanon in its efforts to strengthen its sovereignty and ensure that the use of force remains solely under the control of the Lebanese state.
In a meeting with Lebanese President Michel Aoun in Beirut on Tuesday, Aboul Gheit emphasized the Arab League’s backing for Lebanon’s sovereignty and its commitment to supporting the Lebanese government’s efforts to maintain exclusive control over weapons.
The two leaders discussed regional developments, with Aboul Gheit stressing the need for international pressure, particularly from the United States, on Israel to end its occupation and halt ongoing violations of Lebanese territory. He described the implementation of the ceasefire agreement reached last November as a crucial step toward restoring peace and stability in Lebanon.
The talks also touched on the situation in the Palestinian territories, particularly Gaza. Aboul Gheit highlighted the recent ceasefire agreement as a key step toward halting violence, rebuilding Gaza, and opening a viable political path to establishing an independent Palestinian state.
