Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan reaffirmed Turkey’s full support to the Syrian government, noting that Syria’s new People’s Assembly elections on October 5 represent a pivotal step in the country’s history.
The foreign minister added that Syria’s stability and security is key for Turkey’s national security. “Our border with Syria and everything beyond it is important to our national security, so, Syria’s unity, stability, and territorial integrity directly affect Turkey’s national security,” he stated on an interview with Turkish TV TRT.
Fidan reiterated his country’s rejection and condemnation of the repeated Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, which could create new realities that threaten to divide the country.
He called on SDF to reach an agreement with the Syrian government and preserve Syria’s territorial integrity.
Fidan considered that lifting US and European sanctions on Syria would help remove funding constraints and contribute to attracting investment and the return of refugees to their country.
