UNICEF: Situation in Gaza Strip is catastrophic, risk of famine is worsening

Geneva, SANA- UNICEF spokesperson Tess Ingram said that the situation in the Gaza Strip is catastrophic, warning of the risk of famine in the Strip increasing if urgent action is not taken, stressed that the famine is accompanied by the continued violent Israeli bombardment, while “there is no safe place in Gaza.

Ingram told the Turkish Anadolu Agency, “the risk of famine spreading in Gaza City is real, and families are unable to provide food for their children”. Noting that “Palestinians in the Strip, particularly those east and north of Gaza City, are living under constant threat from escalating Israeli bombardment.

Ingram stated that “residents of these areas are fleeing the bombing westward toward the sea, where number of camps and tents along the coastal strip is increasing,” noting that “hospital directors informed her of an increase in the number of children suffering from fractures, burns, and wounds as a result of Israeli bombing in recent days.

She noted that Palestinian families live in a state of helplessness because they know that the worst is yet to come, and that “there is not enough international pressure to change this reality.”

Ingram added that UNICEF-supported clinics are crowded with families waiting to have their children tested for signs of malnutrition. Indicators show that the general rate indicates that 15 to 20 percent of children who have been tested suffer from malnutrition, which is a very high percentage, exceeding the threshold of famine.
