Health Minister urges support for Syria in building an inclusive healthcare system

Geneva, SANA – The Seventy-eighth session of the World Health Assembly (WHA78) is ongoing in Geneva under the theme “One World for Health”, set to continue until May 27.

In his address on behalf of the Syrian Arab Republic, Health Minister Dr. Musab al-Ali emphasized that lifting sanctions imposed on Syria would mark a turning point and a real opportunity for positive change in the lives of millions of Syrians.

He called on member states and partners to stand with Syria in ensuring healthcare for all, building a more equitable and inclusive health system that protects lives, fosters peace, and supports Syria’s future.

Dr. al-Ali stated: “At this critical juncture in Syria’s history, the Ministry of Health is leading the recovery process with determination and responsibility, based on national priorities, the trust of the Syrian people, and coordination with international partners.”

The minister highlighted that Syria’s healthcare system has suffered severe damage over the years, resulting in a significant decline in medical services, with approximately 40% of hospitals either non-operational or functioning only partially, while many healthcare workers have had to leave for safety reasons.

Dr. Al-Ali outlined the ministry’s comprehensive vision for gradual recovery, focusing on rebuilding and rehabilitating healthcare infrastructure, with plans to restore at least 200 health facilities over the next 18 months, using a classification system based on damage levels, needs indicators, and population density.

Additionally, the minister stressed the importance of supporting and developing the national healthcare workforce, improving governance in human resource management, advancing vocational education and continuous training, restoring essential services, and ensuring fair and universal health coverage, which is central to the ministry’s reform strategy.

The ministry also aims to enhance governance and emergency preparedness through reforms in healthcare management, health financing, supply chains, and digital infrastructure.

Dr. al-Ali reaffirmed Syria’s commitment to international health regulations, recognizing the country’s readiness as an integral part of the global health security system.

It is noteworthy that the World Health Assembly is the highest decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO). It defines the organization’s policies, approves its budget, and hosts delegations from all WHO member states.
