Doctors Without Borders (MSF) Team Inspects Tartous National Hospital

Tartous, SANA- A team from Doctors Without Borders (MSF) visited Tartous National Hospital on Sunday and met with Dr. Adel Barhoum, acting head of the Tartous Health Directorate, and Dr. Thuraya Bilal, the hospital director, to assess its operations and discuss ways to provide essential medical equipment.

In a statement to SANA, Barhoum explained that the team reviewed work across various hospital departments, particularly the emergency section, and gathered information on current needs and required upgrades. Key areas in need of improvements include intensive care, burn treatment, dialysis units, and some surgical departments.

According to Barhoum, the delegation was given a detailed overview of hospital operations, including patient statistics, to assess the necessary support.

Meanwhile, Abdul Karim Haddad, the hospital’s administrative director, noted that the Doctors Without Borders project spans six months, covering infrastructure maintenance, repair of malfunctioning equipment, and supplying five dialysis machines, along with medical tools, consumables, and medicines for both emergency and kidney treatment on a monthly basis. He added that work is also underway to renovate and upgrade the burn unit.

Dr. Marc Chagall, a representative of Doctors Without Borders, highlighted that the organization has been operating in Syria since 2012 and started supporting the hospital’s emergency department about a month ago.

He explained that as Syria’s situation evolves, so do its medical needs, and the organization now focuses its assistance based on priority requirements—providing medical aid, collaborating with the hospital for patient care, offering medication, training healthcare staff, and supporting the dialysis department.
