Damascus, Dec. 28 (SANA) Accompanied by representatives from the Ministries of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Health, as well as a team from the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), Minister of Finance Mohamed Yisr Barnieh and Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Hind Kabawat reviewed the services provided at Al-Biruni University Hospital, particularly “Basma” Unit for treating children with cancer.
During the visit, they discussed work requirements and challenges with the hospital administration and Basma Association, as well as ways to secure medical supplies and expand access to services to cover all children with cancer across Syria.
In a statement to SANA on Sunday, Minister Barnieh emphasized the importance of providing financial and logistical support to Al-Biruni Hospital and Basma Association. Minister Kabawat stressed the necessity of coordinating efforts between government entities, local organizations, and international partners to expand cancer treatment services nationwide.
The Director General of Al-Biruni University Hospital, Dr. Radwan Al-Ahmad, said that the hospital treats around 1,000 patients daily for chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or follow-up care.
The Executive Director of Basma Association, Rima Salem, noted that the association treats 40 percent of Syrian children with cancer at the hospital. Its other programs serve an additional 60 percent, and its services have reached over 12,000 children under the age of 18.
SAMS Country Director Baraa Al-Samoudi said the visit aimed to assess services and study the possibility of providing additional support in cancer care.
Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) is a nonprofit that provides medical care, aid, and training in Syria and nearby countries. It supports hospitals, supplies medicines, and strengthens local healthcare.
