Health Minister, European Parliament Discuss Strengthening Health Cooperation

Health MinisteSyrian Health Minister Musab Al-Ali discussed on Tuesday with a delegation from the European Parliament, headed by Deputy Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Hanna Jalloul, ways to enhance cooperation in the health sector and mechanisms to support it.

During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the current situation of Syria’s health sector, identifying urgent priorities and needs, as well as ways to ensure the delivery of medical services to hard-to-reach areas.

Minister Al-Ali stated that about 40 percent of health centers across the country have been completely destroyed, while 60 percent suffer from significant structural damage. He pointed to a shortage of essential medicines and the migration of more than 35 percent of highly qualified medical personnel.

Al-Ali added that the ministry is focusing on governance and unifying all health services under its national framework. Committees have been formed, he said, to update the hospital regulation law, which has remained unchanged since 1953.

The minister noted that 17 new hospitals have been put into service, along with the addition of 53 new departments in existing hospitals. Furthermore, 300 health centers that were previously out of service have been reopened, accompanied by training and rehabilitation programs for medical staff.
