Krak des Chevaliers: A World Heritage Site Telling Nine Centuries of Syrian History

Homs, SANA – Krak des Chevaliers (Crac des Chevaliers) is located in the western countryside of Homs, perched on a hill 750 meters above sea level. It is considered one of the most prominent historical monuments in the Middle East and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006.

The castle was built in 1031 AD and was called “The Fortress of the Kurds” after the Kurdish garrison that later inhabited it.

It attracts visitors and researchers from all over the world thanks to its unique defensive design and architectural and cultural value, dating back more than nine centuries. It includes an external moat and a defensive wall containing 13 towers.

Engineer Hazem Hanna, head of the Krak des Chevaliers Department, confirmed that the castle is one of the largest and most beautiful castles in the world, pointing to the annual restoration projects implemented by the Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums to preserve this historical landmark and promote it as a tourist destination that supports the local economy.
