Latakia, Oct. 2 (SANA) Latakia University was the highest-ranked Syrian institution in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027, placing in the 2001+ band and becoming the only university in Syria to receive a numerical ranking.
Other Syrian universities included in the rankings were given “Reporter” status, meaning they submitted data but did not receive a numerical position.
Latakia University President Dr. Iyad Fahsa told SANA on Thursday that the university was assessed on 18 indicators across five areas, including faculty-to-student ratios, international engagement, research performance and scientific papers indexed in the Scopus database.
Fahsa said the university plans to expand scientific research, improve infrastructure and strengthen cooperation with regional and international academic institutions as it seeks a higher ranking next year.
He said the ranking could support wider recognition of the university’s academic programs and degrees, noting that the university had previously obtained international accreditation in human medicine.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings assess institutions across five broad areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement and international outlook. The rankings use data including Elsevier’s Scopus database and academic reputation surveys.
The 2027 edition included 2,297 universities from 118 countries and territories, making it the largest edition since the rankings were launched in 2004.
