Damascus, March 19 (SANA) – Syria is moving forward with tax reforms and digital transformation plans aimed at improving efficiency, simplifying procedures, and enhancing services for citizens and businesses, officials said on Wednesday.

During a meeting of the General Commission for Taxes and Fees, chaired by Finance Minister Mohammed Yisr Barnieh, discussions focused on upcoming legislative changes, including a unified income tax, sales tax, real estate transaction tax, and stamp duties. The reforms are intended to streamline the tax system and support economic activity.

The meeting also highlighted efforts to modernize tax administration through digitalization, including the appointment of new leadership positions—among them a deputy director general for digital transformation—and the rollout of systems such as electronic invoicing and e-payment platforms. Authorities also reviewed the national customs platform designed to automate procedures and accelerate clearance processes.

Officials emphasized improving coordination between tax and customs bodies, introducing simplified mechanisms for tax advances on imports, and enhancing transparency and compliance. Plans also include strengthening local finance directorates through staff training, performance-based incentives, and clearer accountability measures.

The newly formed tax authority board, which includes private sector representatives for the first time, reflects a broader push to build trust, modernize public finance management, and support Syria’s economic recovery.
