US double tariffs on India come into effect

New Delhi, SANA- The US double tariffs on India took effect Wednesday, amid expectations that Indian exports to the United States will decline by up to 45% in 2025 and 2026 compared to last year.

US President Donald Trump had previously decided to raise trade tariffs on India from 25 to 50%, in response to New Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil and the failure of negotiations on a new trade deal with Washington.

Reuters reported that the doubled fees include goods such as clothing, jewelry, shoes, sporting goods, furniture, and chemicals.

Trade groups estimate that about 55% of India’s $87 billion worth of exports to the US could be affected by the new tariff increases, giving competitors such as Vietnam, Bangladesh, and China greater access to the US market.
US data showed that total trade in goods between the US and India reached $129 billion in 2024.
