The second International Conference on Palmyra kicks off in Lausanne

The activities of the Second International Conference on Palmyra were launched at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. Organized in partnership with UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre and the ALIPH Foundation, it brought together leading archaeologists and scholars from around the world.

The Syrian delegation emphasized that the restoration plan goes beyond repairing damaged monuments. It aims to fully recover the archaeological integrity of the site and reaffirm Palmyra’s symbolic role as a cornerstone of Syrian identity and a testament to cultural resilience.

“Palmyra is not just a collection of ruins; it is a testament to our history and our recovery,” the delegation stated, underscoring the importance of honoring the city’s legacy as a beacon of national pride and global heritage.

The conference convened experts from international universities and research institutions with prior experience in Palmyra, fostering dialogue on collaborative efforts to remove the site from UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger. Participants explored new avenues for joint planning, funding, and technical support.
