Syrian boxer withdraws from World Championship, rejecting to play against boxer from Israeli entity

Baku, SANA – Syrian boxer Alla-Eddin Ghassoun has withdrawn from the competitions of the World Boxing Championship currently held in Azerbaijan after he was chosen by lot to play against a boxer from the Israeli entity.

Chairman of the Federation of Boxing, Issa al-Nassar, told SANA that Boxer Ghassoun was aspiring to be qualified to Brazil Olympiad, yet lot chose him with “an Israeli” boxer and that is why he preferred to withdraw from the Championship.

Al-Nassar added that the patriotic feeling pushed Ghassoun to leave the championship in spite of the intense preparations he got and the expectations of achieving good results, announcing rejection to shake hands with a player representing the occupying Israeli entity and then leaving the Championship in favor of his love for his country.
