Al-Jaafari: Some states continue backing terrorism in Syria and region due to inability of UN to question terrorism sponsors

New York, SANA-Syria’s permanent envoy to the UN Bashar al-Jaafari said the strict respect of the UN Charter, on top of which the principles of respecting states’ sovereignty, territorial integrity, settling international conflicts peacefully and non-interference in the internal affairs of states, constitutes the sole criterion that guarantees  enhancing sovereignty of law universally, keeping international peace and security, achieving development and consolidating friendly relations among the UN member states.

In an open debate at the UN Security Council on reaffirming commitment to the purposes an principles of the UN Charter and principles at China’s request on Monday,  al-Jaafari stressed that the experience showed, during the past seven decades, the need for guaranteeing the respect of the UN Charter, reforming some methods and activating others in a way that enables the UN to play its mandated role.

He clarified that the UN was hindered throughout its experience with endeavors of powerful states and members of the Security Council to control it and change it into a tool for achieving their interests and policies paying no heed to the contradiction between their policies and the UN Charter principles.

Al-Jaafari added that the UN is still unable, in view of the policies of these states, to take the required measures in accordance with the international legitimacy, particularly those calling for ending the Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan and the other Arab territories and obliging Israel to stop its aggressive policies and racial crimes against the Arab citizens under occupation.

He emphasized that the UN is invited to serious and honest action through its civil and military manifestations to confront the terrorist expansion represented through the terrorist organizations linked to al-Qaeda such as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Jabhat al-Nusra and those breeding from them in Syria and Iraq, in addition to  Boko Haram and others.

Al-Jaafari reiterated that counterterrorism will not succeed if it contradicts with the principles of the UN and the international law and without pre-coordination and full cooperation with governments of the concerned states and as long as the policies of the countries backing terrorism are condoned.

The situation Syria and other countries in the region have been witnessing proves that some UN member states have exploited the UN organization to flagrantly interfere in Syria’s internal affairs, incite the crisis, spreading false lies against the Syrian government, sponsoring all forms of terrorism and hindering the efforts of a settlement with the aim of destabilizing Syria and undermining its sovereignty and national options, al-Jaafari said.

He added that some countries rushed to impose unilateral measures against the Syrian people and work for paving the way for justifying a military intervention under false humanitarian pretexts.

Some influential countries at the UN Security Council have demanded some regional regimes to gather takfiri mercenaries and criminal terrorists who are thirsty for bloods from many regions in the world, arm, train and finance them to establish their alleged state and make Syria a base for their terrorism to set off to the neighboring countries and the whole world, Syria’s UN Representative said.

He stressed that the Turkish regime carried out early on Sunday a flagrant aggression against Syria when hundreds of its soldiers and military vehicles have penetrated deep into the Syrian territories, which uncover the deep ties between this regime and the ISIS terrorist organization.

“Training foreign mercenaries in camps supervised by the US Pentagon in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar and Jordan and sending them through borders to fight the Syrian state is a flagrant violation of the simplest principles of the UN Charter and an unjustifiable breach by the US to Security Council Resolutions No. 2170, 2178 , 2195 and 2199,” al-Jaafari concluded.
