Antiquities Department condemns destruction of Deir Sunbul archeological site of Idleb by terrorists

Damascus, SANA- General Directorate for Antiquities and Museums (DGAM) condemned the destruction of Deir Sunbul site in the province of Idleb by the terrorist organizations.

Deir Sunbul is an archeological site located in Barisha Mount which dates back between the 2nd and the 6th century.

In a statement published on its website on Wednesday, the DGAM said that the terrorists of Ahrar al-Sham and Jabhat al-Nusra have destroyed Deir Sunbul which was preceded by the destruction of many monasteries, churches and archaeological buildings in the forgotten famous cities in the province of Idleb that belong to the Roman and Byzantine eras and some of them are registered on the world heritage list.

The DGAM called on all states and international institutions interested in world culture and heritage to assume their responsibilities in preserving Syrian cultural heritage through pressure the supporters and financiers of terrorist organizations which committed those disgraceful acts.

The statement affirmed that the aggression against the Syrian archaeological cities aimed at trafficking in the decorative architectural pieces, with Turkey is being the main market for them in addition to the illegal excavations in all areas controlled by terrorist groups.
