"Over 85,000 Syrians refugees repatriate Since December 2024": UNHCR

Amman, SANA-The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced Friday that more than 85,000 registered Syrian refugees in Jordan have returned to Syria between December 2024 and last Tuesday, clearly indicating the increasing pace of voluntary returns following political transformations and developments in the country.

In an exclusive interview with Jordan’s Al Mamlaka TV, UNHCR Representative in Jordan, Maria Stavropoulou, stated that the agency launched a free transportation program in January 2025 in response to requests from refugees wishing to return.

She clarified that the program includes, in addition to free transportation services, pre-departure medical examinations, individual counseling sessions on the situation in Syria, and service centers available to returnees.

She noted that the UNHCR supports the voluntary return of refugees “in safety and dignity,” emphasizing that the initiative seeks to empower refugees to make informed decisions. The initiatives also include providing reliable and up-to-date information on areas of return, legal assistance, and ensuring support at border crossings, in coordination with relevant authorities.
