Damascus, July 18 (SANA) President Ahmad al-Sharaa said on Saturday that the Syria International Textile Exhibition (NASTEX 2026) reflected the importance of reviving Syria’s textile industry and supporting economic recovery through production, investment and job creation.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the exhibition in Damascus, President al-Sharaa said the textile industry represented a chapter of Syria’s history, describing it as a reflection of the craftsmanship and traditions of the people of the Levant.
“The textile industry represents a chapter of our history. It was a reflection of the craftsmanship and taste of the people of the Levant, who learned through it the values of precision, perseverance and dedication,” he said.
The president said textile production in the region had historically contributed to economic development, expanded trade and connected Syria with markets around the world.
“The craft of textile production in the Levant was a living ambassador to the world. It helped build the economy, expand trade, establish routes associated with it and attract merchants and travelers to the region,” he added.
President al-Sharaa said Syria was seeking to revive aspects of its heritage while building its future through reconstruction and development.
“The Syria International Textile Exhibition taking place today is a milestone of hope and prosperity for the Syrian people, and a creative starting point in our efforts to combat poverty and hardship, support reconstruction and create thousands of job opportunities for our people,” he said.
The president said Syria’s future was being shaped by civil peace, national unity, balanced diplomacy, security and stability, and economic growth, adding that the country aimed to regain its role as a source of creativity, expertise and skilled craftsmanship.
President al-Sharaa also highlighted Syria’s historical reputation for producing Damascus steel swords, alongside silk and fine textiles, saying the combination of strength and refinement reflected aspects of Syrian diplomacy.
“Between sharpness and softness lies the essence of Syrian diplomacy, shaped by what Syria has long been known for — giving everyone their due,” he said.
The president pledged to pursue a vision of peace, saying: “We promise our people and the world that we will craft a vision of peace, weave a tapestry of prosperity, and compose verses for those who meet us with sincere feelings and intentions.”
The NASTEX 2026 exhibition aims to support the revival of Syria’s textile sector by connecting manufacturers with technology, financing and export markets. The event spans 150,000 square meters and features more than 300 exhibitors from over 25 Arab and international countries.
