Syrian delegation in Japan to review Hiroshima’s experiment in reconstruction and post-disaster planning

Tokyo, July 4 (SANA) A Syrian delegation, headed by Assistant Minister of Public Works and Housing Imad al-Masri, was briefed on Hiroshima’s experiment in reconstruction and recovery, following the destruction caused by the U.S. atomic bombing in 1945.

The visit comes as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation and benefit from Japan’s expertise in reconstruction and urban planning.

The delegation also visited Hiroshima City Hall, where it attended a presentation on the stages of the city’s reconstruction, the urban planning mechanisms that accompanied its recovery, and the legislation and projects that helped transform Hiroshima into a global model for development and peace.

The delegation later visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, where it reviewed key historical milestones related to the atomic bombing and laid a wreath in honor of the victims of the disaster.

During a meeting with Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui, al-Masri underscored the importance of expanding cooperation and expertise in the fields of reconstruction and urban development.

He also stressed the value of drawing on Japan’s experience in urban planning and post-disaster recovery management to support Syria’s reconstruction efforts.

The delegation’s program includes inspecting the experiences of several Japanese cities in reconstruction and urban planning, with the aim of supporting Syria’s urban development and reconstruction plans.

The visit comes as part of efforts to draw on leading international experiences in post-disaster recovery, as Japan is widely regarded as one of the countries that has developed advanced models for recovery and rebuilding disaster-hit cities.
