Amman, June 20 (SANA)– The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Jordan affirmed Saturday that more than 200,000 Syrian refugees have voluntarily returned to their homeland between December 2024 and June of this year.
On the occasion of World Refugee Day, which comes on Saturday, June 20, the UNHCR stated in its reports that voluntary return movements from Jordan to Syria have seen a notable increase over the past two years, with displaced people continuing to make individual and personal decisions to return.
UNHCR spokesperson in Jordan Yousef Taha told Al-Mamlaka TV that 23,150 Syrian refugees have returned since the beginning of this year, including 2,500 refugees between June 1 and June 13. He noted that return movements are still continuing at a steady pace.
Taha explained that women accounted for 49% of the total returnees compared to 51% for men, while children made up 41%, amounting to approximately 82,000 children.
UN High Commissioner for Refugees data showed notable indicators of an increasing return movement to Syria during 2025, as nearly one million internally displaced persons returned to their areas between January and June 2025. During the same period, more than 526,000 Syrian refugees returned from abroad, before the total number of returnees from outside the country rose to around one million by mid-September of the same year.
The world observes World Refugee Day on June 20, an occasion established by the United Nations to highlight the suffering of refugees, promote solidarity with them, support efforts to protect them, and find lasting solutions through voluntary return, resettlement, or integration into host communities.
