Damascus, June 12 (SANA) Syria’s National Commission for Missing Persons (NCMP) said Thursday it had launched an investigation after human remains were discovered in the city of Douma on the outskirts of Damascus.
The commission said its forensic teams, working alongside the Syrian Civil Defense, were dispatched to the site following reports from local residents.
Specialists have begun documenting, collecting and recovering the remains in line with forensic procedures designed to preserve evidence and assist in future identification efforts, the authority said.
The discovery comes as the commission continues efforts to uncover the fate of thousands of people who disappeared during years of war.
Officials urged residents not to approach suspected burial sites or mass graves and to report any discoveries to the authorities to avoid compromising evidence.
Earlier this week, recovery teams responded to a separate report of human remains found in the Qalamoun region north of Damascus.
Several mass graves have been uncovered across Syria in recent months, containing the remains of people who were killed during the rule of deposed regime.
