Damascus, June 5 (SANA)    Syria’s Minister of Local Administration and Environment, Mohammad Anjrani, said Friday that Syria faces growing environmental challenges including water scarcity, desertification, wildfires, and the effects of climate change, stressing that environmental protection has become a central component of recovery and reconstruction efforts and is integrated into government plans across the industry, energy, local development, and economy sectors.

In a post on his official Facebook page marking World Environment Day, Anjrani said the ministry is working to protect biodiversity and Syria’s genetic heritage, strengthen measures to combat overfishing, and implement programs to improve air and water quality and reduce environmental pollution. He also referenced ongoing efforts to address illegal dumping sites, contributing to improved environmental and public health conditions across various regions.

Anjrani stressed that environmental protection represents a direct investment in human health and quality of life, and is a guarantee of a more sustainable and prosperous future for Syria, describing the environment not as a separate file from citizens’ daily lives but as the foundation of life itself — water, air, food, health, and the future of coming generations.

World Environment Day is observed annually on June 5 to highlight environmental challenges such as climate change, desertification, biodiversity loss, pollution, and waste management, and to encourage governments, institutions, and individuals to adopt more sustainable practices.
