Raqqa, May 25 (SANA) Rising water levels in the Euphrates River partially flooded the Al-Yonani camp for displaced families on the southern outskirts of Raqqa on Sunday, damaging dozens of tents and prompting fears of further flooding.
Residents said floodwaters entered the camp quickly, forcing families to evacuate children and rescue belongings amid a lack of emergency equipment and preventive measures.
“The water reached the tents very fast,” resident Abdul Hakim Al-Ali told SANA, warning that conditions could worsen if authorities and aid organizations did not intervene quickly.
Another resident, Mishal Al-Sallam, said continued flooding could leave more families without shelter overnight.
Warda Umm Yasser, a mother living in the camp, said families were struggling to protect children and salvage remaining possessions as water spread across the area.
Khaled Al-Ali, whose tent was damaged, said residents had received no prior warning about rising river levels, leading to losses of food supplies and basic necessities.
Residents appealed for urgent assistance to relocate affected families and provide emergency aid.
Earlier on Sunday, the Early Warning and Preparedness Department at Syria’s Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management renewed warnings for residents living near the Euphrates River in Raqqa and Deir Ezzor provinces over rising river levels caused by increased water flow.
The department urged residents to avoid areas near the river, suspend the use of boats and ferries, and refrain from swimming until conditions stabilize.
