Damascus, April 9 (SANA) — Damascus International Airport resumed its operational activity on Thursday with the launch of its first flight to Sabiha Gökçen International Airport in Istanbul, following the reopening of Syrian airspace.

The step marks the beginning of a gradual return of air traffic and efforts to enhance regional connectivity after a period of suspension.

Alaa Sallal, Director of Government Communication at the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, said airlines had been notified of the decision to reopen Syrian airspace and resume operations at Damascus airport, adding that carriers are expected to begin scheduling flights.

He added that the decision was taken in coordination with regional and international partners, in line with international standards to ensure safety, efficiency and the smooth flow of air traffic.

On Wednesday, Head of the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport Omar al-Husari announced the reopening of all previously closed air corridors and the resumption of air traffic through Syrian airspace, along with the restart of operations at Damascus International Airport.

Operations at the airport had been suspended in recent weeks due to escalating regional tensions, as exchanges of strikes involving Israel and the United States on one side and Iran on the other led to temporary airspace closures in several countries to ensure aviation safety.
