Damascus, March 16 (SANA) – The irradiation facility at the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission (SAEC) continues to operate around the clock to support sterilization of medical materials and improve the preservation of food products using radiation technology.
According to the commission, the facility uses gamma rays generated by the cobalt-60 isotope, a widely used global technology that enables safe and effective sterilization through precisely controlled radiation doses monitored by specialized laboratories.
During 2025, the station processed approximately 480 tons of materials, including 200 tons of medical supplies and 280 tons of food products, reflecting the growing role of irradiation technology in enhancing biological safety and extending the shelf life of food items.
The commission said official certification documents are issued for materials that undergo irradiation, confirming compliance with international quality and safety standards.
Irradiation facilities play an important role in improving the quality and safety of medical and food products, ensuring they reach consumers under reliable sanitary conditions.
Established in 1976, the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission oversees the peaceful applications of nuclear science in Syria and works to develop research, education and technical expertise in nuclear technologies while promoting nuclear and radiation safety in line with international standards.
