Damascus, March 16 (SANA) Residents of the Barzeh neighborhood in Damascus gathered Sunday evening to mark the anniversary of the first protest in the Syrian uprising against the deposed regime in the capital on March 15, 2011.
The gathering was held in Freedom Square in Barzeh and commemorated demonstrations widely seen as an early spark of the nationwide revolt that erupted against the deposed regime.
Despite the rain, residents from Barzeh and nearby districts attended the event, organized by the Barzeh Media Office in cooperation with local volunteer groups “For Damascus” and “Athar.”
Participants recalled their sacrifices to break the barrier of silence and said the victory achieved on Dec. 8, 2024, opens a new phase defined by the challenge of rebuilding and reconstruction.
They added that the victory marked the beginning of a new phase focused on rebuilding Syria on foundations of cooperation and solidarity, with collective spirit forming the cornerstone of the country’s future.
Syrians are set to mark next Wednesday the 15th anniversary of the uprising’s outbreak on March 18, 2011, which ultimately led to the fall of the deposed regime on Dec. 8, 2024.
