Damascus, Feb. 24 (SANA) Abdul Basit Abdul Latif, Chairman of the National Authority for Transitional Justice, met on Tuesday with the UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria, Claudio Cordone, and his accompanying delegation to discuss mechanisms for international support regarding the justice path in Syria.
According to a statement released by the Authority via Telegram, the meeting, held at the Authority’s headquarters in Damascus, focused on identifying specific support channels the United Nations can provide. These include a wide range of knowledge-based and scientific expertise aimed at bolstering the national strategy for transitional justice and ensuring its long-term objectives are met.
During the session, Abdul Latif delivered an extensive presentation on the operational nature of the National Authority. He detailed its various work streams, its overarching national strategy, and the specialized institutional structure adopted to execute its mandate of ensuring accountability and national reconciliation.
For his part, Deputy Envoy Cordone expressed the United Nations’ full readiness to provide the necessary technical and consultative support to ensure the success of the transitional justice process. He underscored the importance of this path in fostering a stable and rights-based future for the Syrian people.
This high-level engagement follows a series of strategic meetings held by the Authority’s delegation in The Hague between February 9 and 13. Those discussions were part of the state’s efforts to adopt international best practices in transitional justice and to refine legal mechanisms for the prosecution of perpetrators from the ousted regime, specifically regarding grave violations such as the use of chemical weapons.
