Damascus, Feb. 20 (SANA) Units of the Syrian Arab Army on Friday fired the traditional Ramadan cannon at the Unknown Soldier Square in Damascus, marking the time of Maghrib prayer and reviving a long-standing cultural and social tradition associated with the holy month in Syria.
Director of Media Relations at the Ministry of Defense, Oday al-Abdullah, said in a statement to SANA that the Ramadan cannon is an integral part of Syria’s Ramadan heritage and collective memory. He noted that the Army’s participation in this event reflects its commitment to preserving Ramadan customs and reinforcing their presence in the public consciousness, highlighting the deep moral bond between the Armed Forces and the Syrian people.
Al-Abdullah added that the cannon’s sound at iftar time carries a message of reassurance and safety for Syrians, symbolizing the unity between the Army and the people and strengthening mutual trust and national cohesion.

He explained that the event falls within the Armed Forces’ social responsibility, especially during national and religious occasions, noting that the Ramadan cannon brings joy to fasting families—particularly children—and reflects the military institution’s connection to the religious and humanitarian values shared by Syrians.
Participants expressed their happiness at taking part in the event, which revived childhood memories and the special rituals of Ramadan. They emphasized that the Army’s initiative carries symbolic significance, reflecting its closeness to the people and its participation in their religious and social occasions.
