Damascus, Feb.16 (SANA) President of the Syrian Arab Republic, Ahmad al-Sharaa, affirmed on Monday that the Unity of Islamic Discourse charter is a step in the right direction which promotes balance and unity of stance.

“I believe the assessment of the past year’s performance should be done by the people themselves, as they are the true observers of the current government’s work. However, it is my responsibility to ensure that citizens are fully informed about the situation in Syria,” the President added during a panel session at the “Unity of Islamic Discourse” conference held at the Conferences’ Palace Damascus.

He affirmed that the challenges in Syria are numerous, as administrative and institutional corruption has accumulated for more than 60 years, in addition to the huge destruction inflicted to infrastructure and across all sectors of life.

President Ahmad al-Sharaa said that it is important that “we act according to a true plan and focus on what serves the interests of the people.”

“Significant reforms have been implemented across several ministries, as well as in Syria’s relations with Arab and international countries. We are working to build a balanced economy and follow a sustainable development track,” the President said.

President al-Sharaa stressed that during the past year, a large institutional structure was established in Syria, and “we resort to standards to evaluate performance scientifically and accurately so that our steps are correct,”

President al-Sharaa considered the “Unity of Islamic Discourse” Charter as an important step to promote unity of word, consolidate moderation, achieve balance in religious discourse, and move away from any provocative discourse or incitement of sectarian or doctrinal strife, in order to enhance social harmony and preserve the unity of the national fabric in light of the diversity that characterizes the Syrian society.

“We are not in a position to engage in centuries-old intellectual disputes. Syria has many pressing priorities, including strengthening social and moral discipline,” the President said.

President al-Sharaa added that any platform used to address the public is a profound responsibility as words are a trust, and the minds of the people are a trust.

“Imams and scholars play a vital role in raising public awareness and shaping the next generation, we share the responsibility of guiding society with religious leaders, schools and the media,” President al-Sharaa said.

He added that directing public opinion and social behavior is a shared responsibility across different state sectors, including education, higher education and mosques as every institution must fully carry out its duties.

“The integration of institutional work in the state is very important, and every institution must address its basic function,” the President said.

Earlier, in the presence of President al-Sharaa, the Ministry of Endowments launched a charter titled “Unity of Islamic Discourse” as a national framework aimed at unifying the discourse of religious scholars and preachers across the country.

The move was announced on the second day of the ministry’s conference.
