Turkish-EU agreement to support efforts to end terrorism in Syria

Ankara, SANA-Turkey and the EU agreed to enhance joint cooperation to support efforts to end terrorism in Syria and create conditions for the voluntary, safe, and dignified return of Syrian refugees to their country.

This came in a statement released by the Turkish Ministry of Interior following a Turkish-EU meeting on migration and security issues, held in Istanbul, chaired by Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya and European Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner.

The meeting also covered cross-border organized crime, migrant smuggling, and counterterrorism efforts.

The statement confirmed that the two sides emphasized that the stability and prosperity of Syria is in the interest of the entire region, including Turkey and the European Union.

“I emphasize that we are waging this struggle primarily for our country and our citizens. With the fall of the Assad regime, we observe a positive increase in the voluntary, safe, dignified, and orderly return of Syrians to their country,” the Turkish Interior Minister concluded.
